Carmel Littleton (1958-2021)

Islington Council

Carmel Littleton was the former Corporate Director of People’s Services at Islington Council and one of the founding members of Islington4Women. Littleton was a people person who aimed to better the lives of Islington residents. She truly cared about Islington and was passionate about making the borough a fairer and more equal place.

On Islington’s independent Fair Futures Commission in 2017-18, Littleton helped make lots of positive changes to improve the futures of children, young people, and their families, including leading the 100 Hours World Of Work and 11 By 11 initiatives. Littleton also tackled the exploitation of vulnerable young people by organised crime groups, and improved Islington children’s social care services from “good” to “outstanding” during her time at Islington Council.

Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz said about her:

“She was a beautiful person, who had an amazing way of insisting we always did more and better, with so much compassion that it compelled you forward. Her commitment and passion for young people in our borough was unwavering.

Carmel was both deeply loved and respected by staff at all levels, as well as partners, councillors and of course the young people she worked with and for.

Her legacy lives on in Islington, and also through this project. Her heart for Islington and commitment to making it a better, safer place is inspirational to all of us who love the borough as she did.
