Frances Carter

Cripplegate

Frances Carter has worked in Islington for a long time. She worked in Children’s Services until 2009 where she was responsible for young people’s services including early years and children’s centres. After that, she joined the Cripplegate Foundation where she is the co-Vice Chair. The Cripplegate Foundation funds projects around Islington to benefit the local community, as well as influence beneficial policy.

When Carter’s children were young, she campaigns for better play facilities in and around Islington. This experience inspired her to encourage others to campaign too, as she realised that ordinary people can make a big change, particularly women.

Young people’s rights are of huge importance: the right to have somewhere safe and dry, the right to an education that is free where you are treated as an individual, where you can learn in your own way and follow your own interests.

Carter is passionate about equality and rights and fights hard to defend the community. She continues to encourage those who start up their own initiatives in Islington, saying: “Always try things out because you don’t know what you can do until you try.”
