Little Simz

Evening Standard

Little Simz was born in Islington to Nigerian parents. She studied at Highbury Fields, and attended St Mary’s Youth Club, which she describes as “the place where it all began for me.” At the Brit Awards in 2022, where she won an award for best new artist, she said:

My name is Simbiatu Ajikawo. I am from North London, Islington.

I grew up on a council estate. I am an independent artist and to be here tonight receiving this award is such a blessing. I am so grateful.

(I am) living proof that if you work hard at something, no matter where you come from, your background, your race, you can be something extraordinary

Little Simz not only makes beautiful and powerful music about her experience, but she inspires others to believe that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Simz also tries to give back to her community, donating to charities such as Kazzum Arts, and several local community projects in Islington. She is especially passionate about re-creating youth groups and spaces for young, inspired children in North London.
